Pork

The current breed we raise is called Idaho Pastured Pigs or IPP for short. There are 3 sows and a bore we keep year-round giving us our feeder stock. These pigs are pasture raised, meaning that they have access to grass while it is growing. They have a central feeding and bedding area and are rotated around it in a pinwheel eating fresh grass as they move. They get to wallow in the mud during hot days and play in the cool mornings. They do receive grains to help grow. We buy bulk feed from Cashton Feed and it is a soy free proprietary mix that does not include fish meal or flax seeds.
We also raise a second breed called Mangalisa. They are newer to our farm and we are still developing our system of management for these animals. They have a thick coat of hair that protects them from our fence system. We feed them a corn and soy free feed from Princton feed. These pigs take a year to grow out and are a great homesteading pig. The jury is still out on our long term plan with these pigs so any feedback is appreciated.
